Dinosaurs are the stars of Latin American science, and usually dinosaur stories quickly spread around the world.
In 2012 in the southernmost corner of the Americas, Argentine paleontologists discovered the remains of the largest land animals that ever existed—dinosaurs as tall as a seven-story building. These giants weighed about 70 tons. Today, a recreation of the as-yet-unnamed Titanosaur species is shown as a main attraction at New York’s American Museum of Natural History. Yet news of this historic discovery did not receive the typical global splash that dinosaur discoveries in the North Hemisphere receive.
In this session scientists will discuss their discoveries and what their research has added to the knowledge of dinosaurs. Along with a Latin American journalist, the researchers will analyze international news coverage of dinosaur discoveries and the implications of a systematic bias that ignores Latin American scientists.
