The 2017 Latin American Edition of the Jack F. Ealy Science Journalism Workshop will bring together more than 50 science journalists for a one-day professional development workshop to present practical, hands-on training sessions to sharpen reporting skills on the most pressing science, health and environmental issues in the Western Hemisphere.
The workshop, which has been organized by the Fundación Ealy Ortiz each year since 2004, is designed to promote excellence in science, health and environmental coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean and to underscore the need for deeply reported science coverage by local and regional media organizations. Latin American and Caribbean journalists covering science, health and the environment are eligible to participate. Aside from slots reserved for funded fellows, seats are available to journalists from the region during WCSJ2017 registration on a first-come, first-served basis.
This year’s workshop is organized in collaboration with the nonprofit journalism organization InquireFirst and the World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ2017) Regional Committee on Latin America and the Caribbean.
Journalists attending the workshop will engage in interactive sessions with prominent science reporters and editors to discuss subjects such as building international partnerships to enrich science coverage, finding funding for science reporting and making complex global science, health and environmental stories relevant for local audiences.
Journalists will discuss techniques for connecting with the scientific community as well as effective ways of obtaining information from institutions and organizations. The workshop will include a session on staying safe while reporting on potentially dangerous stories such as logging, environmental contamination, and oil and mineral extraction.
Technology experts will meet with journalists during the workshop to discuss low-cost or no-cost digital tools for reporting on a wide range of topics such as biodiversity, climate change, environmental policy and public health. Journalists attending the workshop are encouraged to bring their laptops and mobile devices to participate fully in the program.
A special focus of the workshop will be a session to set up the framework and launch of a regional science communication network. This network will enable reporters, photographers, videographers and filmmakers attending the workshop to build on professional relationships established during WCSJ2017 and collaborate across the region to produce in-depth, international reporting on global science stories.
