So you finally got your hands on some data. After sending requests and cajoling sources for months, an email finally arrives with a link. You click it and sitting on your computer is a gigantic file called ‘top_secret_data.csv’. You try to open it but Excel just crashes. You can’t even see what’s in this thing, let alone gain insights from it and tell a story. Uh-oh!
Or maybe a file arrives in a format you’ve never heard of. Or you can open the file but you don’t even know where to begin with the analysis. Or you do understand the data but it needs such complicated cleaning that it just seems hopeless… These are the mundane problems that plague data journalists. Opening files and cleaning data is >90% of the work and all of the pain.
In this introductory hands-on workshop, you learn how to get started with data journalism. Laptop required.
This workshop will be offered in two sections, coinciding with the breakout session timeslots: 2:00 – 3:15 pm and 3:30 – 4:45 pm.
