The catastrophic global decline of biodiversity is recognized as among the most pressing problems society faces. The biological, economic and social consequences of biodiversity decline in oceans, tundras, savannas and forests remain unclear and in desperate need of study. The Brashares lab studies how the consumption of wild animals and conversion of natural habitats affects the dynamics of animal communities and the persistence of populations. This work extends beyond traditional ecology and conservation to consider the economic, political and cultural factors that drive and, in turn, are driven by changes in wildlife abundance and diversity. Justin Brashares will discuss the far-reaching implications of biodiversity loss, specifically for ecosystems and human health, wealth and justice. He’ll consider how an understanding of these complex linkages between humans and the environment can help identify levers of positive change.
