West Village at UC Davis

West Village, a Zero Net Energy community at UC Davis, is designed to enable faculty, staff and students to live near campus, take advantage of environmentally friendly transportation options, and participate fully in campus life.

NOTE: Start and end times given for field trips are the times when the trips depart from and return to the Marriott Marquis San Francisco.

UC Davis, recently ranked number one in the world for its campus sustainability practices, is at the forefront of the energy revolution. On this tour, you will see some of the latest trends and innovations in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The tour will begin at the California Lighting Technology Center, which works to bring great ideas in efficiency and design to the lighting industry, many of which are on display at their fascinating facility. We will then travel to UC Davis’ new solar farm—the biggest in the UC system—which generates 14 percent of UC Davis’ electrical needs. Next we will head to UC Davis West Village, the nation’s largest planned zero net energy housing community for lunch and tours of the community, model apartments, and energy labs. Also at West Village is the Honda Smart Home, which produces as much energy as it—and the Honda Fit EV in the garage—consumes. During the tour you will engage with leading energy experts on sustainable transportation, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, lighting and cooling technologies, international energy technologies, and the water-energy nexus. Join us on this exciting tour and see how UC Davis is tackling the energy challenges of the 21st century and beyond.
