Biography

Barbara A. Koenig is an anthropologist who works in the interdisciplinary field of bioethics, holding a joint appointment in the Department of Anthropology, History, and Social Medicine at UC San Francisco. In April 2016, she was appointed director of a new cross-university program in bioethics at UCSF. Previously, Koenig was the founding executive director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford University, where she was on the faculty from 1993 to 2005. From 2005 to 2011, she created and led the Biomedical Ethics Research Program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Koenig received her B.A. in history and her B.S. in nursing from the University of Minnesota. Following university hospital appointments as a clinical nurse in pediatrics, she received her Ph.D. from the joint UC Berkeley-UCSF program in medical anthropology.
