Biography

Jill Banfield is mineralogist-turned-microbiologist with an appointment in earth and environmental sciences at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The Banfield Lab studies the inter-organismal and environmental interactions of natural microbial communities using cultivation-independent approaches such as metagenomics and community proteomics. Her research focuses on the structure and function of microbial communities, bioremediation, how soil microbial communities respond to global climate, and new biology across the tree of life.
