Biography

Nathan Myhrvold is the vice chairman of TerraPower, the first spin-out company of Intellectual Ventures, an invention company based in Bellevue, Wash. As founder and CEO of Intellectual Ventures, he focuses on funding, creating, and commercializing inventions in a wide range of disciplines. Previously, he served as the chief strategist and chief technology officer of Microsoft. During his 14-year tenure with the software leader, he founded Microsoft Research and numerous technology groups that resulted in many of Microsoft’s most successful products.

Nathan has an extensive background in mathematics and science – he earned a doctorate in theoretical and mathematical physics and a master’s degree in mathematical economics from Princeton University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics at Cambridge University and worked on research with renowned cosmologist Stephen Hawking. He has published original, peer-reviewed research in astronomy, paleontology, and climate science, and he is author of several books on the science of food and cooking. A member of NASW, he also serves on the advisory board to the University of Washington’s physics department. Nathan shares the views of his peers at TerraPower that nuclear energy is the only proven generation source that can provide the large-scale, base load electricity needed to meet the world’s growing energy demands while combating global warming.
