Biography

Rick Fienberg is an astronomer specializing in education and public outreach. He has a B.A. in physics and an M.A. and Ph.D. in astronomy, but discovered in graduate school that he enjoyed teaching and writing about astronomy more than research. In 1986, a year after finishing his doctorate, he became an assistant editor at Sky & Telescope, the world’s leading monthly magazine for astronomy enthusiasts. Within five years he was running the parent company, Sky Publishing. After nine years in the publishing business – including circulation, advertising, finance, and production – he returned full-time to editorial, and after eight years as editor in chief left the magazine. For the 2008-09 academic year he served as a visiting scientist and astronomy instructor at Phillips Academy, the prestigious college-preparatory school in Andover, Massachusetts. He now manages press relations and communications for the American Astronomical Society.
