Biography

Serusha Govender is a broadcast journalist, foreign correspondent, multimedia producer, writer and photographer currently based in Southern Africa. She has covered stories in more than 20 countries over five continents, reporting on politics, trafficking, disease outbreaks, environment crises, healthcare access, science and innovation and from the front lines of conflicts and natural disasters. She has also covered energy policy from Capitol Hill in Washington, DC; has acted as an expert facilitator for renewable energy dialogues hosted by the US Embassy and the South African Environmental Affairs Department; and she is one of a handful of journalists to have reported on the global nuclear debate from deep inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone in the Ukraine before it reopened. Her feature work has appeared in CNNHealth.com, eNews Channel Africa, Huffington Post, Guardian US, Foreign Policy, AfroBeat Radio, Africa.com, RealHealth magazine, IPS Africa, The Daily Meal, and Applause Africa. She has been featured on CNN International, NPR, Mix 102.3 (Australia), SABC News Radio, Arise America, ABCNews.com, and FoxNews.com. Govender also reports for Channel News Asia, MENA News, TRUE Africa, GOOD magazine and VOA News. She holds an M.A. in science journalism from Columbia University and an M.Phil. in ancient cultures from the University of Stellenbosch. She sits on the World Federation of Science Journalists steering committee working to improve health communication across African communities affected by infectious diseases like Ebola and yellow fever. In addition, she is a Robert Wood Johnson fellow, a CNN International Journalist fellow (CJF), an IWMF fellow, and a Carnegie Foundation grantee. Govender is also a 2017 Reuters Institute fellow at Oxford. In that role she produced in-depth research analyzing the impact of the media’s coverage of Ebola, Zika and yellow fever.
