2017 marks 20 years since the movie “Contact” was released, and it still holds up as a classic story about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI. But the search has shifted since 1997, thanks to projects such as the Allen Telescope Array, Breakthrough Listen, Breakthrough Starshot, and Pale Red Dot. We will update the vision of the 1997 movie to reflect the realities of 2017, with the help of scientists who are searching for signals, looking for potentially habitable exoplanets, and thinking about sending messages and probes to alien star systems.
