An international trio of women dignitaries from Jordan, South Africa and Japan—all high-ranking leaders in their nations’ science research, education and policy enterprises—will be the featured speakers at this sponsored luncheon. The dignitaries will discuss the changing role of women in international science and policy, outline the important global issues on their agendas, and examine the role of science journalism in diversifying the stories we tell.

Offering their personal and professional perspectives on the role of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) leadership will be:

• The Honorable Naledi Pandor, South Africa’s minister of science and technology, speaking on “Who Will Do Science in the 21st Century—An African Perspective.”

• Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan of Jordan, president, Royal Scientific Society, chair of World Science Forum 2017 and a UNESCO Special Envoy for Science for Peace, speaking on “Science for Peace: Innovation & Cooperation to Find Solutions for Critical Global Problems.”

Miyoko O. Watanabe, deputy executive director, Japan Science and Technology Agency, and vice president, Science Council of Japan, speaking on “Better Science and Innovation Through Gender Equality.”

The three speakers were chosen for their collectively vast experience in technology industries, higher education, scientific research, and the advancement of diversity and inclusion in science, science policy, and science communication. After individual remarks, they will join Cristine Russell for a moderated discussion. Emily Drabant Conley, vice president of business development for 23andMe, will serve as discussant to provide a private-industry perspective. Seema Kumar of Johnson & Johnson Innovation will introduce the speakers and make closing remarks. Audience members will be invited to provide feedback in a brief survey, to be tallied and shared with WCSJ2017 attendees afterward.
